Verona the city of .....
This day was the day that we hit the travel wall. It was a " youre adorable but do you have to breathe so loudly?"
we spent the majority of this day being cranky. Most of it stemmed from normal couple quarles but most importantly the stress of experiencing this particular city. We had been to Livorno and decided it wasnt for us. THis was the city we had the highest hopes for. we were banking on that warm fuzzy feeling and it didnt immediately come. My over worried mind went into over drive of "if not here then where??" and I focused intently on trying to make our experience in Verona so perfect that it was nearly impossible for either of us to enjoy. Imagine trying to see all of new york in half of a day.
First we took the right bus in the opposite direction. Being my fault for running across the street when i saw the correct number. luckily the driver told us if we stayed on the bus he would be driving that route in about 20 minutes. so instead of being to the air bnb in 10 minutes from the train station it was more like 50, butttt we did get a fabulous tour of verona! (i keep telling myself this)
Our air bnb was in a delightful location. directly on the river and very close to the downtown area. (literally across the bridge) However this epic location came with endless noise. Since it was on the first floor and facing the busy street we heard street traffic and passerbyers all hours of the day. Unfortunately this was not romantic local chatter but more like endless high school tour buses unloading to get to the downtown region on foot. It did have its perks like the view and a washing machine but it did not provide the best sleep.
after unpacking and bathing in the worlds smallest shower (seriously , i had to put my arms over my head to turn around.) we headed to dinner.
This turned out to be the WORST DINNER EVER. Like i said we had high hopes for the city and they came crashing down once more. This restaurant was bad in almost every way possible. I ordered a pasta and keith had rabbit. my pasta was this spicier than hell red pepper (which i cant eat) sauce with soggy noodles and a mystery meat (pork fat?) and gobbbsss of butter and cream. Overall i had a few bites before deeming it inedible. Meanwhile we had a poor bottle of wine and keith had numerous conversations over the dietary restriction of no dairy. after some discussions we understood the rabbit had barely any butter in it. once the rabbit arrived we saw this to not be true. the chef came out and happily described the rabbits journey. ( lets call the rabbit julia child. jc for short)
- first the vegetables are soaked in butter for a few hours,
-make a butter bubble bath and let them simmer for another couple hours
- stuff raw JC with 4 sticks of butter ( " just a few sticks, just a little)
- let JC cook in butter veggies and butter insides for 2 days. add butter as you go along
- then, make a butter sauce to put on top of JC and veggies.
- serve JC to someone whos lactose-intolerant
needless to say we left very hangry.
